classicgaming.com — It was 20 years ago today...The catastrophic crash of 1984 had wiped out or severely weakened all the major home videogame companies, and home computers were becoming more and more popular. The future of videogames looked bleak and it seemed as if the home videogame system would become a thing of the past.

"Deciding to launch the system nation wide in 1986, they began pushing R.O.B. and the NES to the masses aided by the slogan "Now you're playing…with power." And the rest, as they say, is history!"Do the math. 20.

Bluetooth... Nintendo invented it years ago, unfortunately batteries weren't powerful enough back then so they opted for the primative wired serial polling system.

It was released in North America on Oct 18, 1985 so it's its 21st. But does it really matter.

I don't know that most of the young people on digg can appreciate the rise of the NES. I was 15 years old when the NES came to North American shores. These were dark days for video games. Arcades were closing, Atari had been the leader, but couldn't follow up the 2600 with anything decent. There was this illusion in the industry that the next gen of consoles had to be a home computer that connects to your television. This was largely due to the success of the Commodore 64. Does anyone else remember when the line between consoles and PC gaming was blurred... And then along came the NES. A revolutionary system whose mark and influence is felt to this very day.Remarkable times in the world of videogaming!

It would have been great if Nintendo released the Wii on this date.
