I've been using Ning to help set up a social networking site to promote a new tv pilot. It has its limitations, but it's far, far more robust than Facebook when it comes to customizing the look of the site, and their tech support staff is very hands-on. Some of the comments have me interested in taking a closer look at WordPress, however. Here's a link to the show if you're interested: Imagine This! -- http://www.imaginethistv.com/

Ning gathers people around subjects? So we have gone full circle FROM what newsgroups do TO what newsgroups do?Gee, make a buck of a reinvented wheel. Oh wait, isnt that what Apple did?

In an effort to clear up some of the negativity about Ning, you can now do much more with Ning that ever was possible. The Joomla! Expander - which has been approved by Ning to offer to social networks on its platform allows the network creator to add fully integrated Joomla! components to their network. This opens the doors to nearly 5,000 new features and so many other benefits it is hard to describe. Check it out...www.sitesuites.com

The main difference between numerous NING social networks and Facebook, MySpace and other 'single' global social networks is the investment to marketing which varies on the creators knowledge and capabilities. Therefore none of NING's social networks will ever be able to compete with Facebook or Orkut, even though they have lots of similar features.

Ning has some problems to overcome, while still growing and expanding. First, the "owner" of their social network has to pay Ning to be allowed to run their own advertisements. Seeing how advertisements are how many of the top social networks earn money (Facebook, Myspace, Friendster); the market is cluttered with people trying to get their share without having to pay to even have it on their site first.Second, because Ning is free for general use, many people abandon their social network when it doesn't grow fast enough or generate revenue fast enough. That could be a problem that Ning may want to address.Ning overall is a great idea, but it comes at a cost especially in light of the financial woes of Facebook, Twitter and other high-value networks.

I'll say social networking software is 10% software and 90% people. Here is an example of business social networking software that has much more online collabration features in it, check it out, http://bit.ly/cYAyUw
