sportsillustrated.cnn.com — NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player -- too good, it turns out.The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more.

An Interesting fact about Jericho Scott: when he was 9, Jerry was not allowed to pitch by league officials as we was too good.

For the average player it's closer to mid 30's, but you don't have average players as pitchers, thus is where the 40 mph for an average pitcher of that age comes from. Also, remember what I wrote after about living in a town that lives for baseball and recall that the league in this story is only 3 years old. They've yet to really see anyone pass through the league, so they have no idea what a good average 9yr old pitcher will throw.

Sports has done this to itself. Over the years the very purpose of competition has been muddied to the point where it's difficult to understand the point of playing a game in the first place and following "rules" becomes bothersome and hurtful to children's emotions. Parents that were lazy unpopular children have worked hard to change the rules of 'competition' to mean "meaningless interaction". Very common among today's working class morons. As far as I'm concerned, hard cheese. What goes around comes around. You get what you give. You sow what you reap. Now get used to it.

Where does it say developmental league? The article. How do I know this league has so many choices? The article. How do I know you didn't read the article? Your comments.I don't know why his parents chose to enroll him below his skill level, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt -- maybe his other skills aren't as developed as his pitching. What happened to -- you play the position the coach wants you to play? Let's change the SI headline to "Parents Go Completely Apes**t When Coach Puts Their Son in Left Field." Now let's see the world come rushing to the parent's side. It's a developmental league, it's not about the championship. It seems he has the pitching thing down. He can put on a cup and get behind the plate -- until he dominates the league at catcher that is. Then he can move to shortstop.
