Not my type of music but I love their actions. They even "open-sourced" some of their music by releasing garageband multi-track files on their homepage.way to go!
There are a couple of catchy songs, but mostly it sounds like a symphony of people banging on pipes, 3 different guitar chords, electronic screeching, and speaker feedback, burying the unintelligible vocals, which sound like some stressed out guy who needs a Xanax and a cup of hot chocolate.Free is too high a price.
Well, for me, this is amazingly awesome. However, I have to question Trent's judgment; how does he expect to make any money off this, by hoping there are enough fans oblivious to P2P that will buy the album from the store? I'll download it for the multi-tracks... that's just TOO awesome in itself (helloooooo editing fun!), but I'll definitely pick this thing up in stores because, if anyone deserves compensation for their hard work, it's NIN.
"They're GarageBand multitrack files... or something... for the Mac. They're useless to the vast majority of people here, so I'm a little curious at the orgasmic reaction some people are having.Someone wake me when they've converted them to 256kbps VBR MP3 or, better still, FLAC... :-P"Are you kidding? This is revolutionary that they're releasing the naked, hardly mastered tracks to the public for FREAKING FREE! I'm not so sure that Reznor is sane for giving away this music... but that's another matter. I don't think I've ever heard of a big-name artist releasing the guts of their music for the public to toy with.
Q: """how does he expect to make any money off this"""A:1. Promotion *IS* music sales. There is no way over, under or around this central tenet of doing business in selling music recordings. a better thing will be sent send a check to NIN so artists can realise they don't need openly criminal organisation like the RIAA. The RIAA as no legitimate reason to exist.Beside artists are way better to releason they song for free on the net and do tours (where the money is) as they get nothing from the digital mafia (RIAA/MPAA)
The RIAA must be s**tting in their Depends right now. A big name artist releasing tracks for remixing on the Internet, through a site well known for its embracing of piracy at that. I think it is time more artists start embracing the Internet as a marketing tool, instead of paying some college bred phone jockeys to do it for them. It probably helps that Trent is working with a nice nest-egg of cash to do this, but nonetheless, it is amazing that he would risk such chastisement from his label to do this. Its great to see an artist like Trent doing what smaller indie labels have been doing for a while, allowing their artists to release music via their MySpace or mp3.com. Most of what I listen to, I have discovered via the Internet. When he released some of the tracks from With Teeth in the same manner, via the NIN website, I ate it up. I am a composer, and I was thrilled to get to tinker with the music from a man who was my inspiration for starting into musical composition in the first place.Kudos, Mr. Trent Reznor!
The guys that run Pirate Bay get big money from Corporate sponsors to advertise on their site. They are not sticking it to the man, nor are they anarchists. Trent Reznor is not doing anything revolutionary by uploading his music, look how many people on here now are going to go buy his CD. He knows that and that is his intention, not because he is generous and cool. He is a hypocrite and a sell out.Wake up!

In fact, since the first track (The Hand That Feeds) was open sourced, a site was made http://ninremixes.com dedicated to distributing fan remixes. It now has nearly 2000 mixes.
