Hendrix? He went the standard 60 route. He was recommended by an already established act. In his case it was the Monkees. A Television act at the time. Hendrix helped them learn to play and they fed his name higher up. But he still was an unknown until Woodstock. It was the 7 AM performance of The Star Spangled Banner that made Hendrix a star. But all in all he was as commercial as everyone else in '69. And things were different then. It was the managers that controlled the money back then, not the labels.
