Yeah this was scary as hell back when i was a kid, and still holds up as far as the creep factor is concerned. But since watching the remake of Dawn Of The Dead slow zombies just don't do it for me. I mean I have a bad knee and could evade the old school slow lumbering brain chanting zombies of this film. But hey Romero single handedly invented an entire sub-genre.
No, in today's movies they forget any plot or real thrills and resort to grossing you out in place of actual scares. We have basically 3 types of modern horror movies:1) The Japanese remake- The Grudge, The Ring, etc2) The Teen mystery- Scream, I Know What You Did..., Urban Legend, etc3) The Gorefest- Saw I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII,VIII, Hostel, etc
I still prefer the original Dawn, followed closely by Day and then Night. The followed much further by Land, and I haven't even seen Document of the Dead yet, but I hear it's not all that great.
I believe that Reader's Digest review was penned by none other than Roger Ebert himself - I think he's changed his mind about the film by now, however.
