seattlepi.nwsource.com — New York, home of the $4 cup of coffee, may be where the commodity gets its next price jolt. Prices for arabica coffee beans on the New York Board of Trade could climb more than 20 percent in the next 12 months and outperform some of this year's best commodities investments, including copper and silver.

It's only because the Arabica beans keep getting stopped by Homeland Security on their way into the US...

From my time in Seattle, I can vouch for the fact that they are all too obsessed with the price of coffee on the market. Ever since the price doubled overnight a decade ago and Starbucks almost went under, everyone's a bit jumpy.Hell, a few days before Katrina hit last year, the business section had an article about how the storms could affect the price of coffee--talk about not seeing the big picture!!

EXACTLY, the next f**king idiot that mentions the "5 dollar cup of coffee" at starbucks is getting thrown in front of a bus. The most expensive cup of coffee at starbucks is 1.80. They do offer other drinks for more money, but these are like f**king desserts at a restaurant and take considerably more preparation than pouring hot water through some ground up beans.

There is no doubt Starbucks has hedged their main ingredient, also they are the sole customer of many of those impoverished coffee farms. I work there p/t during the interim and I can say there's no way that garbage is worth the cups its put in. If it floats your boat, pay $2 for a cup of joe or $4 for a double latte. It is a drug like caffeine or cocaine, just because it gives people an aire of sophistication, or is socially acceptable doesn't mean its any better.

FTA: Coffee in New York may reach $1.30 a pound by the middle of next yearIt's like from $7 to $15 cdn for fare trade coffee and others... up here. Is this the raw price in 50 lb bags or are beans that cheap in NY?

It is a critical domestic and national security priority to seek alternatives and reduce America's dependence on coffee from Arabican countries.
