biz.yahoo.com — Even for an industry awash in bad news, the newspaper business went through one of its most severe retrenchments in recent memory last week, with talk of slashing payrolls, outsourcing printing and selling iconic headquarter buildings.

Content Content Content! People just want the unfiltered facts. TV news has the same problem.

I cancelled my subscription to the Dallas Morning News when they gave their "Texan of the Year" award to the Illegal Immigrants of this country.

"They charge 15-20 dollars just to run a three line ad in the classifieds! Say what? Not when I can put it on Craigslist for free. "And there you have it. I work at a newspaper, and doing the classified section is one of my duties. Classified represents a HUGE portion of newspaper revenue. Craigslist has been the perfect storm that papers have feared. It is not only a competing product, but a competitor that really doesn't have to make money. When you're trying to charge several dollars per column inch to stay alive, and the other guy is not only free but easier to use, you're hosed. Regular retail advertising is also down, but some of that can be contributed to certain factors that aren't related to the changes in the industry, such as major advertisers merging, and the economy (stops a lot of local advertisers from spending money.) Classified is where the hurt is at.Now I'm just doing my job and hoping I'm not in the next round when they say they have to lay more people off...

The newspapers and network news have renounced their role as the watchdogs of industry and government and have decided to shill for them instead. The price they are paying for that is that they are not regarded as reliable sources of information anymore, consequently they are regarded as less valuable since propaganda (also known as advertising) is easy to come by for free. Most smart people I know get their news from a variety of sources, which dissect the events of the day from various perspectives. The fact that the points of view are not coming from the same source makes the likelihood of them being honest and independent better.

Print is a waste of natural resources, something most papers try to jam down our throats. They should do the environmentally correct thing and suspend all hard copy operations. Think of all the trees that will be saved, this alone could end global warming.

Exactly. Why would I read about what happened yesterday in a newspaper when I can read online about what is happening right now?
