Untrue. I am a Newsvine member, but certainly not a popular one. I've had many articles reach the front page (and I've even made a little money on those articles as well). I didn't need a ton of friends to reach the front page, nor did I have to pull any tricks out of my sleeve to do it.Newsvine gives everyone a fair and sensible shot to be heard and noticed. I've been on digg.com longer than I've been on Newsvine, and I've yet to have anything promoted to the front page. Go figure.
To name just a few, DAweb and Adam Hobson are two popular conservatives at all. Newcomer Melody Pearl and several others from the NYT forum shut down are also conservatives, and they all do a very good job at keeping NV balanced. If you think its all about liberals, you must not use it much.

In 2 years, just about every updated website would be drag and drop for the UI (a la Netvibes)

There's only one thing I can say on the matter...Newsvine beats the pants off of Digg.
