physorg.com — "In the real world, we can?t manipulate the retinal images of cars,? said Milgram. ?But we thought we could change the image of taillights. We guessed that if we could make a taillight system that appeared to change in size, it might have a significant effect on braking behaviour.? A roadway was projected onto a large screen and participants..

The signal to the brake lights travel faster down the wire. Earlier the electricity took its sweet time getting there, much like the old lady in the fast lane...

You can't expect everyone to be "proactive," you have to cater to the masses when you design a product, and lets face it, the masses are stupid.

Try telling that to those who drive around 5pm on the 405 and the 10 freeways in Los Angeles...

little bit off topic but you know with all the technologies coming out i wonder when doing a driving test and let say you have a lexus that parks itself does that count? Or would they make you park the car yourself?

After being rear ended once, I'm always anxious about having to brake hard and the person behind me not paying attention and hitting me. Now I've started tapping the brakes to get their attention.

I wonder if Paul Milgram from this experiment is related to Stanley Milgram.I don't even use my brakes sometimes, cuz I make use of engine braking with downshifts. I wonder if this is considered "risky"?

If you're dealing with mud, snow, ice, or dried leaves ABS is actually more dangerous as it doesn't let the tires dig into the junk and get down to the road surface where there's traction. Most people don't understand how ABS operates and just assumes that it'll get them out of any dangerous situation, which is why I think it would be better not to have it as nobody would have an delusions about how well the brakes will work.

Very useful. Such things make me a bit crazy

So you want good braking lights which will fit most vehicles? because it works on inertia, and you only have to connect 2 wires, check out my invention, VBI Lighting ( Vehicle Braking Indicator)which indicates 4 different levels of braking and emergency braking, it is an led bar with 30 led's the middle 6 led's light as a third braking light it then progresses outwards, so level 1 (light braking) will light 12 led's, level 2 (medium braking) 18 led's, level 3 (hard braking) 24 leds, level 4 (very hard braking) all 30 led's light, and on emergency braking the light bar flashes, the emergency braking is set to the same decelleration level as BMW and Mercedes, they have had a trial period and the laws ARE in the final stages of being passed. This could help to reduce accidents, have a look at VBI Lighting and let me know your comments.
