redgreenandblue.org — New York City’s Department of Transportation has tapped the Office for Visual Interaction for testing LED street lighting around the Big Apple. If successful, all of the city’s 300,000 street lamps could one day be made up of LEDs.

We have these in Ann Arbor and I hate them. While driving at night they kill your night vision because of how bright they are but some how manage not illuminate the street. Might just be the way the light is styled, but it is near impossible to see people walking across the street.

OK - nice one, I see what you're getting at. The idea is that you have the LED on an AC source, and don't do any rectification so that when you are on only the positive half of the AC cycle, you get light, hence the 'buzz'.The circuit works since you have a whole bunch of LEDs in series, which required a certain voltage to begin working, and also provides the reverse voltage needed in total to prevent the LEDs from popping/breaking in the negative half of the AC wave.thanks gr00vy - your particularly non technical explanation motivated me, and your link allowed me to learn something :-)
