usatoday.com— The familiar .com, .net, .org and 18 other suffixes — officially "generic top-level domains" — could be joined by a seemingly endless stream of new ones

actually the third world users are alot better about it than you would think. They don't have dementia and were never exposed to an internet that was all .com, .org, .net. Stop being such a racist.
He's not being racist, O7. We're spoiled and grew up with technology all around us. A 40 year old guy in China who is just starting to use the Internet is going to have a lot harder time grasping things. You completely ignore Rogor's post just to cry "RACIST!". That said, I completely agree with Rogor. It's going to be such a pain in the ass for anyone with a legit domain to try and protect it.
This is such a thoroughly awful idea. Can you imagine how much easier it will be to play with TLDs to trick gullible people? Websites ending in ".exe" or ".antivirus", anyone? Not to mention it's a form of extortion. You know there will be a rush to purchase ".cola" and ".ipod" and ".xbox". Companies will feel obligated to shell out to protect their brands -- and ICANN knows it. They're doing it all for the money, even at the risk of throwing the entire system into upheaval.
