The built-in chat in Gmail has animated emoticons. I never card for such features as graphics or buddy icons, so I'm not all that impressed by the new release. Still waiting for more practical and useful features, such as the file transfer many have mentioned.

I don't know about you but I'd rather have file transfer than my picture ... gmail is cool and it could help with the .exe limitation

Why was it more important for Google to add eyecandy avatars instead of group talk or a file sharing function?

Google are working with the Psi guys on libJingle, and Psi have a testing branch that supports voice calls.

Their logo doesn't really bother me. After all it's nice and colorful. :-)
