eurekalert.org — Researchers have added ferroelectric capability to material used in common computer transistors. The result could mean no more waiting for the operating system to come online or to access memory slowly from the hard drive.

I like the ASrock solution. Have the computer boot up the next one when shutting down. So it boots up the machine for next time but puts it into standby mode. Hit power button BOOM instant on.

it will happen as soon as they sell off their stockpile of obsolete crap built up on store shelves and boxed up in warehouses

The problem lies with RAM because it loses its state when it loses power. If you have RAM that won't lose state with power, you get instant on. If you're willing to hold power to the RAM, it's called "Standby", and it's nearly instant on.

Amen. There will always be a market for people such as myself, who refuse to post actual pictures of themselves and their loved ones on the interwebs. I don't trust anyone but myself to adequately back up and store my data. They'll have to pry my laptop out of my stubborn fingers before I give up my right to a PERSONAL computer. On the business end of things, I think that "cloud" computer makes perfect sense for smaller companies who perhaps don't want to maintain their own servers and just want to run a basic network infrastructure. Once you get past the very small companies, tho, I don't think that cloud computing will get nearly as warm a welcome.

POST time can depend a great deal on how your BIOS is configured. One thing you might check is whether POST is doing a comprehensive memory test, or a quick test. The time difference between the two can be pretty great. That being said, many other factors, like memory size, CPU clock speed, etc, can play into POST time. If your laptop has a better CPU and less memory than your desktop, that could make the difference. Finally, and not to be disregarded, is the software that actually performs the test. The laptop might just have more efficient code executing its POST than the desktop.
