ecogeek.org — Upgrading power supplies, isn't the most exciting global warming solution, but it definitely is a no-brainer. When converting AC to DC, and ramping wattage up and down, current power supplies waste ridiculous amounts of power. This is why Energy Star is finally beginning to require 80 percent power supplies.

Nice, but this is about saving money. Although the US personal savings rate does correlate, inversely, to the observed warming trend I doubt saving money will reverse the warming trend. But, I could be wrong, I'm not a economical climatologist.

I dont even look at it as global warming as much as sustainability. The faster our society turns sustainable, the smoother the transition.

Here's a nice white paper on high efficiency power supplies by Google. They have designed and built their own servers which run at about 90% efficiency.http://services.google.com/blog_resources/PSU_whit ...

So are the high efficiency power supplies just full wave rectifiers? It wouldn't surprise me if they've been using half wave rectifiers and throwing the rest of the electricity away. Computer companies want to sell computers cheap, not save you money in the long run on your utility bill.
