There is a need for a website like this that is reliable. Far too often, the sites that recommend open source apps get too caught up in "Oh, and there's this alpha-quality software that doesn't install clean yet, but it's really cool and...", or that goes too far the other way and recommends LaTeX for everything print and text related.
paint.net is a legend at my university....when the guys released it on our servers for download it crashed the whole campus for like 2 days....major slashdot effect. It originated at WSU
Just a note, but the site rather lives by its title and is taking much community input for its direction. If you disagree with something, get on the forum and say it.

One of the most digg-worthy items I've ever seen on Digg. Excellent work.

The projects are still hosted on other websites (such as Sourceforge). This is just to help people find open-source software.

Nice looking site! The list isn't extensive but I like that because it's not overwhelming or overrun with useless apps

Where'd you get that from? And what makes you think those that are would rather host it here?
