iFixit.com — With photos! iFixit disassembled the new MacBooks with Intel's 'Merom', and posted hi-res photos of the new processor, 802.11n wireless card, new SuperDrives, Firewire 800 port, and more. Their MacBook Pro disassembly instructions still work to show you how to get inside and upgrade the hard drive or RAM.

Someone took apart their macbook on the forums after they got their heatsink replaced (do to shutdown issue I guess) and the new heatsinks have Thermal pads and no heatsink compound. I guess apple listened to the "Too much thermal grease" guys on all the forums.

Wow, I like it. Now if Apple could only clock the GPU on the old ones higher up.

And don't judge a performance boost by a CPU speed increase. A CPU that's 10% faster does not even come close to getting you a Computer that's 10% faster (unless the CPU is the only component your favorite software uses {sarcasm} ).Seriously, I've torn my share of PCs apart and beefed up enough systems to say, keep the lid on and you'll be more productive, spending all that time trying to "make it better" will cost you more than it gains you. Save your money for your next well engineered system (unless you do it for the fun of it, then it's priceless, so knock your self out).Wm

Well I ordered my new Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo thinking that the fan noise problems etc would have been worked out. Not the case. The very first time I turned on my MBP I had the infamous fan ticking that seemingly originates from the right speaker grille.I called apple support. They said I would have to send it in for repair. What a crock. They want me to send a computer that I have not even had for an entire day back to get a REPAIR! I sent it back for a refund. Hopefully Apple will get their S%!T together.

I do realize this comment doesn't help you... coming in January as it does... but others may benefit from it. Any Apple retail store will happily exchange a defective new Apple product for a new replacement if you bought it from the online store or another Apple retail store. MacMall has the same policy. My first MBP arrived from the Apple developer store with an overheating problem and the local Manhattan Beach Apple store exchanged it, no questions asked. The decision is left to the store manager, but the company mandate it to get the problem solved on the spot. I don't know when the 'cutoff' period is for calling the machine 'new' but I'd guess ten days or so.My CD MBP eventually did go in for service for a whining fan and came back with a revised logic board and two new fans. I've recently bought a Core 2 Duo MBP and it is VERY quiet and, thanks to the new processor, MUCH cooler. Others have estimated 50 degrees F cooler and that would not surprise me. The C2D is the coolest (and fastest of course) running laptop I've had since my Lombard PowerBook.
