Uhh... you're overlooking graphics drivers, which are kind of the huge 800lb gorilla in the room. At least drivers for high end/recent cards anyway, although RadeonHD is making some progress on that front.

Considering pre-installed Linux is about 0.1% of the market, broadcom would never have noticed the "punishment". This, on the other hand, got their attention.

It can be used for any Windows driver, but I've never used it for anything else and I bet most people would say the same.
