I could be mistaken here, but I thought the whole point of Google releasing android was to help create an open mobile platform and really open up the floodgates of creativity that have been stifled due to clueless handset manufactures who look at software secondary to hardware. I don't think Google really had planned on or cares about trying to top the iPhone now. They simply wanted to push the technology as a whole forward.
