blogs.zdnet.com — Gmail Pictures (which isn't yet available) will be rolled out to accounts slowly very very soon. It lets users choose avatars for their email conversations with people, almost like avatars in instant messengers.

works for me, but the upload is slow, and i can't resize the window that pops up asking me to crop the picture, and there's no scrollbar, so it makes it kinda hard to see the whole picture. but at least now i can add avatars to the friends that are too lazy to do it themselves. it even asks if you'd like to suggest that pic to the person you're adding it to, or if you'd just like to keep it for yourself. pretty sweet.

Looks suspiciously like bloatware to me... I don't find it too difficult to use those awkward name things to see who's sending me messages.

Maybe a better feature would be actually getting Talk intergration for Safari users...

"Looks suspiciously like bloatware to me..."In fairness, there's an option that allows you to "turn off" the feature."Only show pictures that I've chosen for my contacts - Pictures your contacts select for themselves will not be displayed"

"...slowly very very soon." If they roll it out even slower it might be out by today!

Something you may have heard: "Don't upload anything that you don't want public."Note, this feature has a twist: If, for some reason, you don't want to upload a photo to Google that can be associated with your account, it's not entirely up to you: any of your correspondents can innocently or helpfully—or not—upload one for you.
