911blogger.com — The track 'Public Enemy #1' on the upcoming mixtape The Re-up caught my ear this afternoon. The track features a militant style beat similar in tone to his last political track Mosh. While Mosh (which New York magazine called “the most important piece of mainstream dissent since the 60s”) alluded to 9/11, this new track goes into darker subjects.

I listened to "the ghost of Tom Joad" by Rage Against the Machine for a long time before I found out who he was or that the quotes from the song came from The Grapes of Wrath.Another good protest song is "freedom slaves" by tesla came out around 2000 but noone heard of it.Of course they don't play that stuff on the radio.

Wow, I listened to the song in the linked video, and if that's his good stuff he sucks. Rap has become so predictable (starts his song with the yeah... yeah....). It's that same beat we've heard about 10,000 times. I used to listen to public enemy, epmd, tribe called quest, NWA, eric b, and many others from way back when. See, before bands like PE came on the scene, rap was in a similar situation, it became predictable, it was always some guy with the big rope chains and adidas with the same tired beat. Rap had become cooker cutter s**t. It might have even died as a music, a similar fate to disco had things not changed. Ahh, I was going to go on about some other s**t in the history of rap but f**k it. The s**t you guys listen to today is so mainstream it's embarrassing. And it's not that I'm an old fart now, one thing I've kept up with is new music, but man rap is just pathetic at this point.

@Vaha: I'd still think he's richer than you and I. Well, I don't know about you, but me, for sure... You know, if an artist got tremendously famous through the internet alone - making no money whatsoever with the music itself -, he or she could still eBay the shirt he or she wore yesterday, for example, or some other random crap, and earn a living that way. Also, if someone were to distribute music for free online, he or she could still accept donations through PayPal and avoid spending his or her life touring... Or use both. Just a thought.P.S. I do buy CDs from artists that need my money. It's just that I try to encourage the little guys.

"It's been a long time since Rap (Not Hip Hop, because it's just that, a pop version of Rap). If more Rap music was like this again, I'd probably listen to it more (Like Nas, Public Enemy, etc). I don't listen because for the last 8 or 9 years, it's all been about money, and bling bling, expensive cars, have naked big booty ass women, hanging in the club that normal people can't get into, just excessive and meaningless."You clearly do not recognize the difference between Rap and Hip-Hop. Hip-hop is a culture that includes rapping, graffiti, breakdancing, etc. Rap is a subset of this. Hip-Hop is NOT a pop version of rap. And while mainstream Rap is for the most part concerned with rims, bling and hoes, there are plenty of artists with deeper messages ie Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, any artist that was signed with Rawkus, just to name a few. All of which have put out albums in the last 8 years. Maybe you're just listening to the wrong artists...

@maiku00 & topatoThere already is alot of political hip-hop that is QUITE good. It just doesn't find radio play because it is, well, political. Eminem has a soapbox that he can use to put out political songs. If you want to check out some good political hip-hop check out Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, Mr. Lif, Dead Prez & The Coup. Even The Roots, Common & Mos Def make political tracks now and again.

Still, politics in art is not news. It's routine. Good, sure, but routine. Thank you for joining me in Losingville.
