honeybrown.ca— This video shows you a new way to display and organize your desktop. It's 3D, physics-ruled environment looks more like your actual desktop, which may force users to clean and organize it more often.

This is a neat idea, but then again, it's just goign to be this random gadget. Keeping things 2D will make your computer run faster, and neater. If it was 3D (and there are other 3D desktops and OS's with 3D desktops), it would slow down your computer and make things hard to manage.
What i'd like to see in this is a bin, or maybe a hole in the table, where you can trash your stuff. Sure, some things would slip in, and be gone forever... but that's just hte fun :)Hmm, maybe not after all.
This doesn't seem like it would scale well. It might be fine for a small scale user with a few documents and windows as presented. Right now, I've got about 300,000 files with about 500 unique "types". A simplistic desktop metaphor will really get lost fast under that "pile".
Come on people, you're just not getting it. It's not about creating a new desktop for you to install, it's about experimenting with interaction techniques beyond point&click and drag&drop. Tell me, if you're trying to group some files, what's faster:(1) create a folder(2) name it(3) shift-select select or ctrl/cmd-select multiple files(4) drag into folderOR(1) multiselect laso & pile (in one single gesture)(2) name the pileHow about if you then want to open one of those files?(1) double-click the folder icon(2) scroll through the list(3) double-click on the file(4) close the folder windowOR(1) spread the pile(2) tap on the fileYes, he doesn't support filenames yet. Yes, you can't name the piles yet. But come on people, have some vision. Instead of shooting down his ideas, help him find a good use for them.
I just installed this, and it is absolutely amazing. I'm the type of user who keeps several hundred icons, folders and various pieces of stuff on the desktop, and I have, after installing this program, instantaneously increased my productivity dramatically. It's fairly nice looking considering it's still in a quite early version, fun to use, easy to use, easy to see, has plenty of options. What more can I say. I'm really stoked about this. The folks who put this program together have a real winner on their hands. I'm surprised that Microsoft has not yet made a bid to buy them out. I can say it has been great for personal use, but this is really spectacular for business use. Such a simple, small program, yet the productivity gains are undeniable. The free version is amazing, and the pro version is a tad expensive at $29 Dollars, but even still, worth every single penny.

Last time I checked, when you can move an object on the X, Y and Z axises, it's 3D.
