gizmodo.com — The State of the Union address last night was a snoozer, but we HDTV gearheads had fun jumping between the networks, checking out which net was able to deliver the best HDTV signal from lens to screen. We took an HD gander at NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and HDNet, to see who delivered the crispiest, most colorful and most gorgeous HDTV signal of all.

I couldn't watch ABCHD because my local station wants my cable provider to pay for their signal... The free over the air signal... of course my Cable provider didn't want to pay so I've lost ABCHD...CBS was the best for me last night.CBS > NBC (audio was weird) > FOX (complete crap)

Do what I did. Get an antenna. In Chicago, I pick up at least 6 additional english speaking stations (and about a dozen foriegn language stations) with my aerial that Comcast doesn't provide without charging me.

"And why do we need 480p plus 720p plus 1080i plus 1080p?"Does gramma want to pay $10,000 for a huge 1080p TV? Do YOU want to pay $300 for a small 480p TV? I didn't think so. Most people will spend something in the middle of those 2 when they are going to get a new HD TV.We have choices to buy what's best for the amount of $$ we want to spend.

Watching the two playoff NFL games last weekend in NYC (first broadcast by Fox, second by CBS, both OTA), CBS's picture was much much worse than Fox's. It looked nice and crisp when the guys were just standing around, but as soon as the snap happened and the camera started moving, it was too blurry to actually see why the hell anyone was doing! (And yes, I tried various deinterlacing things. I'm using one of those little USB HDTV tuners on my laptop, which works great on my MacBook with EyeTV.) Fox's picture, on the other hand, looked damn good the whole time; it really did make watching sports a different experience, just as the HDTV shills had said.

As per my comment above, last weekend during the playoffs it was clear that, for OTA in NYC at least, Fox's HD was much better than CBS's, which was very blurry during camera motion but clear otherwise. Too bad it's not the other way around, since who cares what the players are doing when they're just standing around?

What's the point of TNT anyway? Edited content; boatloads of commercials; you've seen all the movies before; crappy, stretched "fake" HD picture. It should be taken out and shot.
