apple will make an underpowered but nice looking net-book with the same cheap parts inside (OSX already works on ATOM CPUs) soon but it will be $599

If people insist they *need* Windows on a netbook have missed the point of a netbook completely. Windows has one advantage over Linux these days and that is playing games. Since a person would be a fool to try to play anything but basic games like solitaire or minesweeper on their netbook (which any Linux OS has), they might as well save the money and get a Linux OS based netbook.

I never saw the point in laptops... they are all too big and bulky to carry around, so they're never there when you need them. Why bother when I can do most web stuff with my smartphone, as well as nearly all my audio/video media uses. Better yet, it fits in my pocket, therefore it is always there when I need it. These netbooks with a good linux are pretty tempting with their small size and weight. Given the lower price range, I could see maybe getting one to do more significant computing things that aren't as easy on the small and relatively slower smartphone when traveling or even just hanging out on the couch. Which are basically the only two things that laptop users have over my current setup.

Quick questionIf I want to be able to use word, power point and excel, would one of these be for me? Using mostly in a classroom setting. I have a powerhouse home machine, and generally hate laptops and don;t want to spend to much But I'm the only guy in my MBA classes without one!

Not true. In desperate competition, many companies deliberately make a loss on products in order to force competitors to follow suit into bankruptcy, and to persuade potential competitors not to enter the industry./Finishing my MBA in a month…
