nature.org — The Guatemalan beaded lizard is rumored to be evil, but its venom now used as an effective treatment for diabetes. Too bad there's only 200 of these mythic lizards left in the wild. Is there still time to save this endangered species so that it can help save us?

And you expect venom from an almost extinct lizard to be cheaper?

Perhaps a diabetic was bitten by one of these lizards?

Alright, now all that is needed is a drugs by mail company outside of America to sell a generic version at a 1/10 of the price without a prescription, like folks can do for glucophage. Damn the U.S. and its bulls**t prescription requirements... many people can't afford a doctor. Here's a cheap source of glucophage without prescription (manufacturered in India, sold at a fraction of the cost of what US drug companies charge, shipped to your doorstep via internet order):<a class="user" href="http://www.inhousepharmacy.com/generics/glyciphage.html">http://www.inhousepharmacy.com/generics/glyciphage.html</a><a class="user" href="http://www.inhousepharmacy.com/search_results.html">http://www.inhousepharmacy.com/search_results.html</a>

Not that tedious or expensive anymore. It's a 38 amino acid peptide. Mass Spectrometry will give you the amino acid sequence in an hour. Mass Spec services cost a few hundred dollars. Synthesize the DNA, $20. It comes dried by FEDEX. Try these guys: www.invitrogen.com. Expression plasmids? There's a whole bunch of free ones available from NIH, but if you want to be extravagant, buy an expression system: $300. If you don't want to do the work yourself, contract it out: $3000-$4000. It can even be put inside a bacteria for you. Wham, Bam, Thank you Ma'am. All for less than a high-end gaming computer.

This particular peptide is not glycosylated, although if you are producing something that needs to be glycosylated, there are yeast and now bacterial expression systems that have the human glycosylation system engineered in to them. This increases the price somewhat, since these systems are usually patented. This particular drug is patented as well, but the point is, it doesn't need any lizard components to be made.
