nvnews.net — It's official - NVIDIA has extremely poor closed source drivers that do not work properly on Linux systems. The KDE 4 issue is a widely known problem amongst Linux users. I created the thread to raise awareness of those who were left in the dark after purchasing expensive, high end NVIDIA cards that do not work properly on Linux.

No they aren't. They still have all sorts of horrible problems. Try doing a lookup for ATI and MTRR sometime.

I have had far, far, *far* more problems setting up Linux machines with ATI drivers *still* than I do with Nvidia. Same goes with Nv open source drivers versus ati / radeon. I've been running into MTRR errors with the ATI drviers all week. None of the traditional MTRR fixes seem to work. In my eyes, ATI drivers still stink.

I also experienced this issue (dog slow, unusable) while trying out KDE4, but only a few days later stumbled upon these threads and the actual reason for the problem. Why? Because I couldn't f...ing *believe* that my 8600GT I just bought for good money, replacing some noname onboard chip, brought my desktop to a halt. I think the title is correct, I really feel screwed over.

PC is NOT a platform, and a mac is not not a PC, either. If you mean Windows, say Windows-- and for that matter specify which iteration too.

This is a ridiculous state of affairs, where we have a huge community requesting drivers from a company, and not only do they refuse to provide their customers with up to date drivers, but even refuse to release the source code so the community could make their own, and negate the failure of the company.
