phoronix.com — Months after NVIDIA's previous Linux display driver release, they have finally delivered version 1.0-8774 to the public. Of the changes in this latest driver include X.Org v7.1 support, XVideo with the Composite X extension when using X.Org v7.1, and improved interaction with newer kernels. Phoronix has discussed the changes.

That's true, I heard that the same company that writes NVidia's drivers also writes AMD/ATi's drivers too so the part about either company worrying about "trade secrets" in regards to opensourcing their drivers is probably BS. It probably has to do with wanting to maintain control, and they also don't want people to see the flaws or obscene language in their code. It's true of many companies, unfortunately.

@tropican8If Nvidia open sourced the video drivers, it would be trivial for anyone (with the right skills) to design (read: reverse engineer) an equally competitive product, thus stifling their hold and use of their own technology.I think they should definately write drivers that work, but certainly not open source them.Digg me down cuz i'm not saying 'all info should be free' but it's about trade secrets here... Would Coke give their recipie to the world, only to have Pepsi make an equal product?

@jhuebelVery well said. When you think about the top software and hardware companies in the world, you would have to rank nVidia near the top when it comes to linux support.

It's gotten a lot better. Hell, I even got my x700 mobility chipset going fine, XGL and other such whistles included. GLXgears gives an FPS of ~ 4000, compared to my 7900GTX's ~20,000. Now I don't think it's actually 4.5 times better, so NVidia still seems driver king, but ATi's are at least usable now.``Ragnarok

"Graphics drivers contain upwards of 20 million lines of code,"Well, that's an exageration. The linux nvidia driver has a 2.6 meg code segment. Assuming a 3 byte average opcode/argument length (valid for x86), that means the nvidia driver is 880,000 lines of assembly. Far cry from your 20 million.

While I do agree with you, I must bury you as your IQ appears to be below the requirement for my digging.

@SkyhuskerNo, I really mean Latin. Spanish is of course a Romance language which borrows heavily from LatinFrom Wikipedia:"Gratis is an adjective in Latin and various Romance and Germanic languages meaning "free," in the sense that one does not have to pay for some good or service (free of charge).""Libre is a word in various Romance languages, e.g. Spanish and French (descended from the Latin word līber) that denotes the state of being free, as in "having freedom""Spanish would be the language that actually uses those words or a form of the word that closely resembles it.
