I don't particularly enjoy NIN's music, but for all the awesome stuff Reznor has said/done, I regard him very highly. Free albums, "Steal our music", and now stuff like this. Somebody award him an internet.
Another problem is that by referencing Closer I'm guessing you aren't very familiar with his work. Trent Reznor is king of conceptual albums. The Nine Inch Nails albums that are generally known for being the best The Fragile, Downward Spiral, and Year Zero need to be presented as a complete thought not as individual songs taken from a mixtape.
Nah, it was very industrial rock (which uses electronic sounds to mimic rock beats and guitars in such a way that it sounds like machinery and the like).
