worldwind.arc.nasa.gov — What could be better than google earth? How bout being able to track real time weather, fires, floods, sandstorms all across the globe by the click of the mouse! Also super maps of Saturn, the Moon, EVEN A DEEP SPACE VIEWER! WOW is all I can say. NASA has out done itself with this one, I can't believe this hasn't been covered more on digg...

I take it you did not actually try to use the link. It does not work. They are working on a Java port, then perhaps a wider range of people can run it...

When was World Wind originally released? I used Google Earth (then Keyhole) at some point in 2003 i think. The company was founded in 2001. Just curious. I'm surprised i hadn't heard of World Wind until now. Looks pretty cool, i never found any high res areas, but it's cool enough with the weather features and for Mars.

NASA does not charge for using World Wind in any enviroment unlike google.

This has been around for a while - however somehting that recently made me go wow was the virtual earth plugin, that adds *really high resolution tiles* to the UK using MSNs virtual earth <a class="user" href="http://www.worldwindcentral.com/wiki/Add-on:Virtual_Earth">http://www.worldwindcentral.com/wiki/Add-on:Virtual_Earth</a>

If you dug deeper you would see that there is a java based version planned. At version 1.5 only a .NET 2.0 and Java version will be available. I remember James Fee posted on an older version a couple months ago that generated some good comments about Google Earth and World Wind.<a class="user" href="http://www.spatiallyadjusted.com/2006/04/06/nasa-world-wind-134-beta/">http://www.spatiallyadjusted.com/2006/04/06/nasa-world-wind-134-beta/</a>
