networkworld.com — NASA is teaming with Machine-to-Machine Intelligence Corporation (m2mi) to create a global networking system using small satellites they call "nanosats." Together, they intend to develop swarms of spacecrafts weighing between 11 and 110 pounds, which will be placed in low Earth orbit to create a 5G commercial telecom and networking systems.

Maybe NASA is employing the mysterious and ubiquitious "nanotechnology" to get them that small.

(mv^2/r) = (GMm)/r^2Actually they do orbit forever, provided the satellites are far enough to be in a total vacuum. Low orbit satellites crash to earth only because of the small amount of resistance from the thin atmosphere that's still existent at that altitude.Things do orbit forever, provided they are in a total vacuum. You really think earth and other planets have rockets to keep them in orbit?

The Chinese will not be able to shoot down or take down a network of small satellites.

not like everything they put up there stays forever, eventually everything will burn up in the atmosphere or crash land somewhere, and if there as small whats being said here im sure they will burn up easily.

I had to login just so I could digg this Dr. Who reference. And for those who don't get it:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sound_of_Drums

They will find a way to do just that.

I don't think this would clutter the Earth's atmosphere; the surface area of the Earth is quite large: 510,072,000 km²http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface_area_of_earth - I know it's taboo source wikipedia... but wikipedia has a reliable source for this information as cited on the notes of this link.
