I'd like to point out that going to the moon to get to mars is like going around your ass to get to your elbow. That is why we never send any probes around the moon to sling shot them to Mars, instead we use earth's gravity for the slingshot effects.
see this is how it should work (warning this might get a bit long)if the goverments subisdise the development of skycars then they will in the long run be able to remove roads, thus no more road maintenence, fatality rates will drop to near non existant due to road accidents and everything all round will be improved, now this will help space travel in the fact thatseeing as we are all using flight as a primary means of transport, companies will put more effort into developing more efficient and more powerful methods of propullsion, eventually ending up with a refined method of ion propullsion or some such.eventually this will mean that without trying we have nearly developed effective space crafts, you just need to add the 0 atmosphere and long distance elementsso skycar (which by many many predictions we should already have, and would already have if there was more investments in it) is not only the future of transport, and society, but also the begginings of space travel (of course the aircraft industry will be slightly anoyed at becoming redundant)
Not crashing into planet, crashing into moon.People talk about How we should easily do things with our new technology, but the fact of the matter is that it is expensive to make any of this stuff even in older generations of tech. Everything needs to be near perfect and its not going to be mass produced so you can't spread the cost out like you can with cars.
This will cost billions of dollars, and accomplish nothing. It would cost tons less to send a robot, and be much more efficient, but they send people. Why? To win voters. The moon doesn't offer much. Why are they messing around on the moon? There are much better things to spend billions of dollars on. World hunger perhaps?

It may just be me, but I think we need should invest the cash in getting our s**t together on this planet before we go jaunting off to another planet.
