I defend cerimonies like this for one reason only, Morale. Morale is very important in scientific work, It helps ensure less mistakes when they work and that they dont half-ass their work. If your job made you feel good about what you did, wouldnt you work a bit harder?
Oh and that's just the tip of the iceberg I am sure! I was a government contractor in another life at a NASA base and once was written up for daring to offer a civil servant taxpayer money by transferring all his data to one computer. Yes, he had two Apple 17" laptops with two Apple 20" monitors! He was sure he needed one for home and one for work. Government waste at it's best baby!
We would be living it up like it was 2001: A Space Odyssey if it was 5%! We would have a moon base, a mars base, and probably a big ass space station between here in Jupiter. But no...got to spend billions of dollars on pointless s**t.
But I suppose that WELFARE is perfectly ok. Oh, @EXreaction, I'd get into the shuttle before ANY commecial airliner any day of the year. Talk about death traps... Plaaaeese.
