that's not so different, if you really think about it:gases behave as fluids, they're just far less dense, so we have air (nitrogen + oxygen + water vapor) as the "atmosphere" and then the ocean and fresh water bodies... there's no reason there couldn't be a denser collection of something in the ocean somewhere. It's even been suggested we "sink" carbon dioxide to collect into 'lakes' within the ocean because it becomes denser than salt water at deep pressures.sorry for sciencey response, it's just who i am =)
@ DustinHill,It is not just a metaphor, the verses have multiple layers of meaning on both a physical and spiritual level. It is not the first time that the Qur'an references scientific realities. I know many diggers don't like religious commentary and will instinctively digg me down but I am more interested in reasoned responses to the question. Here is a profound opportunity for an awakening to something extraordinary.021.030 Do not those who disbelieve see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?

Where is the "mysterious" that the title implies? When all is explained there's no mystery left.
