reviews.cnet.com — To be allowed the privilege of purchasing a video that I can't burn to DVD and can't watch on my iPod, I have to allow a program to hijack my start-up and force me to login to uninstall it? No way. Sorry, Amazon. I love a lot of what you do, but I will absolutely not recommend this service.

What I suspect is this is just a taste of how things will be a few years down the road...(Or sooner, depending on how DRMed Vista is.)I see this whole DRM thing as a train wreck in slow motion...And since the consumer has no real power to fight the corp's, in the end, they will win...And they know it.

Anyone who uses Gay as a negative is just an idiot. Even if you were to view homosexuality as wrong it's still just a lazy description.

i didnt think about that before - although i know there is vm detection software. at my university, you can take exams on your own laptop as long as you run the examsoft software. while i'm not elite, and i doubt anyone who is has had to encounter this software, it's pretty decent at preventing itself from running on a vm.

@Swampthing. It's a free world. People are free to criticise the service, which is just as well, because it lets us know what's wrong with it.And uniqueness doesn't excuse the crappiness of Amazon's software, doubly so given that Windows already has DRM built in. It's not like it's the first legal download service in the world, not even for video. And for the record, I doubt many Diggers *will* be using the service after reading the threads on the subject.Following your reasoning, I'll say that if you don't like that, you can go elsewhere for your discussions, because no-one's forcing you to use Digg :-P

Now I see why it's only for the Windows desktop.

I can't help but wonder what, exactly, is installed with this player. Sadly we no longer have the smart guys at Sysinternals to look out for us by analyzing and reporting sneaky rootkits and malware to the world. But, because of the Sony rootkit fiasco last October, there's no WAY I'd install ANY media distributor's specialized "media player" on ANY computer, much less a Windows system (I know, those players generally don't work on other systems anyway). I kind of wish Google had bought out Sysinternals instead.

All these download services are gimmicks...I already pay for satellite tv so I just record good movies with HDTV Wonder and burn to DVD. No extra money spent and I can play it in ANY DVD player.

""At least MS DRM works with everything else."Except Macs."and linux. and anything that isn't windows plays for sure compliant. how again is this different from apple?

Why don't you do us all a favor and take your personal jabs out of here? Some people get so downright immaturely defensive when you simply have a different opinion than their own.

Ok maybe because i have tried it 169 days "after" this article was written, but i have to say I love Amazon Unbox. Crappy DRM, yes. But no different from itunes. Here is why i actaully LIKE amazon unbox.1. Better video quality than itunes.2. My shows are stored on Amazon, and i can download them whenever i like.3. With Vista and Xbox360-MCE, i can watch it on my TV, without having to buy more hardware.4. Connection speeds. I consistently get 7-8mbps downloads. The only thing i dont like is not all studios are on unbox. So for some shows i have to go itunes->ipod->svideo to TV route. Also after unbox, i have canceled my cable subscription, so i have about 50$/per month to buy shows, and watch them (without annoying commercials, mind you).just my 2 cents.
