arstechnica.com — Sony BMG has decided to dip its toes into the world of podcasted music with its recent agreement with marketing agency Rock River Communications Inc., making it the first (and only, for the time being) major music label in the US to license music for podcasting.

No, this is just a mass-use licensing agreement. It's not making the songs "podsafe" for the entire podcast community to play the song as a whole. The car companies probably just want "licensed" background music so their podcasts don't sound canned. The record companies FEAR podcasting, because it's making stars of artists that don't need them anymore....they've got their own distribution now with podcasts and iTunes Music Store.

BMI and ASCAP are only a small part of the puzzle. This story deals with a label, not a governing agency. Simply licensing (and paying their fees) with BMI or ASCAP does not give you rights to play the music. You need to negotiate with those that hold the master for the recordings (aka, the label, the artist, and the writer).I agree though that this story is somewhat inaccurate in that it's misleading.

Sony can go choke on a dick. Who cares what they license, we're gonna bypass it anyways.

So, Sony has agreed to accept royalty payments from podcasters, 99% of whom realize zero dollars in revenue. BFD.There are thousands of artists out there supporting the Podsafe Music initiative. They are much more deserving of the attention. http://music.podshow.com/ is just one of several networks.
