parallelpac.org— On October 18, 2004, Arthur Shelton, a self described Christian and Eagle Scout, murdered his friend and roommate, Larry Hooper, because Hooper didn't believe in God.

It's very easy to see the harm in society that Christianity has done, either through its flawed institutions or its flawed followers (which all Christians are, but some obviously more so than others). Such a powerful force will of course carry lots of baggage with it when tried to be implemented in this world, and such a powerful force will attract lots and lots of polarity (praise as well as criticism). Although some terrible things have been in the name of Jesus and Christianity, many wonderful things have been done as well, and these things happen every single day but don't get the news because it's not flashy or controversial:Dozens, if not hundreds of life-saving CHARITIES around the world, being served by those feeling called to spend their life completely serving others.HOMELESS SHELTERS across the country, either in Churches, or Christian-sponsored programs.URBAN YOUTH PROGRAMS helping get kids off drugs and helping them see what an education can do for them.SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS, EVERYDAY WORKERS contributing to the betterment of society and exploring God's world through research (I myself am from MIT and there are many Christians here working the same way)INDIVIDUAL LOVE AND ENCOURAGEMENT through inside Church communities, external/outreach programs by Churches, strong Christian families, etc...Please don't take individual fanatics to be the representatives of Jesus. Doing so would be as closed-minded as many of the unthinking,blind-faith Christians.
I admire you for your openness and willingness to accept people without qualification. That to me is a sign of someone who truly walks the walk.I do not claim to have all the answers in life. But I don't think anyone else does either.'Live and let live' is a credo that I try to live by.Anyway, I found your comment refreshing.
The Christian God is a loving one.A vengeful one, one that kills many throughout the Bible, because the end justify the means (think about it..).Blind fanatacism kills. Period.
Ahem...1. This article makes no real comment about the true reasons for the cause of the murder. It is obvious that the guy was insane. Religious beliefs are irrelevent to the insane.2. This article was never published by a reputable newspaper. Perhaps, according to previous posts, an article appeared on freep.com about this event, but this article did not appear in a newspaper.3. This article was written by Arlene-Marie, Michigan State Director for American Atheists. Hardly a journalist.4. Nobody has provided a credible link to any authoratative source that discusses this articles observations abou the courtroom events. At most we have the first few lines of a news article describing the sentencing and crime, but not about the courtroom events.
@pwner "All I know is, I'm happy that guy is in federal "pound me in the ass" prison. Maybe he'll convert to Islam after a while too."Wondering what made you write this line: "Maybe he'll convert to Islam after a while too."Is it because you can't accept that the murderer is Christian ? Or because you already have a perception that this is what moslem does ?
Wow, well I guess statistically the atheists, agnostics and the like would eventually _have_ to find _one_ psycho that called himself a Christian to parade around. I find it amusing, and sad, that people use psycho's to try and discredit their enemies or opponents. The sad part is people falling for it. Of course, it takes some creative brain bending to "believe" in atheism or be agnostic, so I guess it's not too far fetched that people would fall for that old trick. Most of the users in this thread: See look. all Christians are crazy murders that kill all the "smart" people. If the above line of thought was valid, would you like to include the Columbine killers (do you believe in God?... yes.... BANG) in the debate? I could go all day about psychos killing people simply because of their faith. Do I then infer that all atheists are homicidal psychos? Well... I don't know, there sure are a LOT of examples........ NO, of course not.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .......this fills me w/ a myriad of emotions. shamefully, my first reaction is to really want to be in the presence of this family and demonstrate the scientific law of comparative resistance by demonstrating how ears can be removed w/ 7lbs of isometric force...or perhaps how easily a trachea can collapse & eyes pushed into their optic nerve in under 3 seconds.......of course, this is my initial emotional reaction....and my logic dictates i've committed to being a better human.my next desire is to find these poor lost individuals.....and hug them tightly, and just let them know that even though "god loves them" , so do we humanists. ...... we love you as much as anyone else, and we would do anything to help w/ your suffering.........finally, my only action will be to write this judge.....express my condolences for having to deal w/ such a horrible display of human nature, then commend him for having courage to render justice in the face of that (i don't believe the death penalty would ever let his family heal....) .....my only wish is that if another atheist is a victim of violence...it be me. i know i would heal...and if not...i know i'm going up to the tops of the tree i fertilize....bearing fruit, feeding people &animals alike......i couldn't imagine a more perfect heaven.....and then no one else would have to suffer. "the only good christian is a non-practicing one" ...and not opinion or stereotype.....the only ones i've ever met....may your logic and reason always guide you .....i love you all, and will always help a fellow human in need regardless of race, religion, or g.w. bush.....we all just need a little love from each other, then we wouldn't have to hope that the air loves us.............i'm going to hug a christian today in fact...and tell him/her that they are loved. i feel so sorry for those that feel so alone they beg for love to the beyond....really, it almost makes me want to cry....i am in fact..and it feels right....this was so f%$#&ng senseless.....-j

there is no 'loophole.' if someone murders, then asks for forgiveness, when they reach heaven they will have that much less for them waiting there.
