I would highly suggest returning your 3G then. I have no problems running ibcnu, openaprs, mail(not so power hungry) and other power hungry apps all at the same time with no problems.
Yeah, we all know it is because all the iPhone 3G users are almost up for an upgrade soon. We're probably going to see this cycle of them dropping off features for the 2 year old models when they probably could handle them. Such as MMS and the original iPhone. Thats technology for ya!
Android has ways to kill apps in the background (and save their state) when resources get low just like how the new 4.0 apple software will have. Persistent apps like IM and music players run as services and do not get shut off automatically when resources are low. A task manager program will help if you have slowing. I hope Apple implement shutting down background apps in a way that will not allow slowdowns, or a task manager will be needed. I have a feeling some people will have some slowing and want a task manager anyway. The MyTouch is not an HTC Magic, it is close, but it only has half the RAM, 256mb like the G1. I did have some slowing if I had resource heavy apps running on my G1 until I rooted the phone to the tweaked AOSP version of android. The code is more optimized to run on the slower hardware like the G1 and MyTouch. <a class="user" href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538456" rel="nofollow">http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=5 ...</a> a link to it if you are interested. I did use the one by Cyanogen, but after Google jumped on him over the market app and he had to remove google apps, I had problems when using his ROM. I use a Nexus one now and do not have any slowing on my phone from multitasking. It just seems the first gen android phones lacked the processing power needed. If you do try rooting your phone, you can gain a lot of nice features, like free tethering, (phone as a 3G modem for a laptop) If you are new to rooting, I suggest researching it well first because you can brick your phone. Mostly if you screw up flashing a new bootloader or recovery mode. A bad main ROM flash can at least be fixed, but those two are essential to just simply powering on the phone, let alone booting up the software.
Oh and so you know, some versions of the rooted ROMS have different versions depending on if you are using a G1 or a MyTouch. You can try the HTC Magic forum, but like I said above, the MyTouch is not a Magic. It is more like a keyboardless G1
I appreciate the link and it does look like an interesting rom, I may look into it in the future if it doesn't look like 2.x is gonna be pushed out on my device. I have to admit I'm not a big fan of rooting, no OTA updates and you gotta make sure you're don't brick the thing (although I know this is not very easy to do), and also last time I did it I lost my paid apps. Just wish Google and Vodafone would hurry up and push out 2.x to this device as it is supposed to have a few speed improvements with it (faster boot, radio improvements etc). Just feel like they have forgotten about us and left us with a crappy device while they work away updating the Nexus One, Droid etc. I suppose the only comparison to make here is this is like a first gen iPhone, they won't get OS4.0 due to the hardware limitations (most likely) but at least up to now they have had updates at the same time as newer models have, and this is nowhere near as old as the first gen iPhone. I just think that Android got it wrong when they designed the OS distribution model, it seems that every phone has to have its own custom ROM baked by Google. It would be much better if they just had a download site (as well as OTA) and made the OS more device agnostic rather than device specific.
You may be right, any w/google branded phone's updates must be handled by google. Part of the licencing deal I guess. This guys ROMs do not update as regular as Cyan did. I usually just check in one a month and only worry about major feature/bug updates, but OTA is much easier from a user standpoint.Hope it works out for you. 2.1 is nice but mainly cosmetic changes, but I do wonder if it will run on slower hardware well. It seems many new devices are coming with 1.6 even though 2.1 is available. It may turn out that Android will have 2 builds, a flashier version (like 2.1) and a more resource friendly version based on 1.6 style, like an Android lite. lol
Yeah I agree, they will likely need to do a lighter-weight version, which is fine with me, I realise it is an older phone and not as capable (things like the 3D drawer etc). Guess it would be better if the the OS was built to detect the hardware it's running and adapt to it so they only have one distribution, rather than needing a custom version of the OS to be built for every phone which is what I suspect is happening (on w/Google branded phones at least, no idea what happens with Sony, HTC Sense etc which I would never buy anyway). Anyway, I'll look into the ROM you mention, thanks.

Have you tried the ROM I linked? It is tweaked but still close to original, and has been stable for me on my G1.
