blogs.chron.com — The goal was for a Guinness World Record for the most-downloaded software in a 24-hour period. All FireFox needed was 5 million copies downloaded. Not only did they meet that goal, they exceeded it by over 1 million downloads!

And a few years more to make subtle changes so they have 12 versions of the same OS which they charge a different price for.

I agree, you're at the mercy of the repos. If all the repos you have installed don't have the software you want (or the version you want), then you're stuck with whatever they have or you have to install from source. There is essentially never any variation with Windows, its basically always done with an installer. The only real exceptions are when they can be run stand alone without even requiring an installer. I've never had a dependency problem in Windows, I've had many dependency problems in Fedora. I know I'll probably get buried for this, but its the truth. And you can't tell me that there are no dependency problems, I get them all the time in Fedora and in fact I have the same issue on two different computers - and I don't use any shady repos (besides the fact that the average user would install any and every repo if that allows them to get the software they want).

"All FireFox needed was 5 million copies downloaded."Actually, they didn't, as they were going for a new record and there was no limit to beat. From spreadfirefox: "Do we have to reach a specific number of downloads in order to set the record? This is the first record attempt of its kind so there is no set number. We'd really like to outdo the number of Firefox 2 downloads on its launch day, which was 1.6 million."
