As a nation of immigrants most of whose ancestors were not here not too long ago it is shameful that we use the names of each other's origins as slurs. As a Jewish woman I remember hearing "Jew" used as an insult. My non-Jewish partner remembers hearing "shanty Irish" as one, too, and certainly I don't have to mention how "black" is used. Now, the bigots are using "Muslim" and "Arab." It's time we remind these fellow Americans that this land was colonized by people from several nations many of whom had extremely strong disagreements about religion. Happily, it continues as such. I'm proud to be American. I'm proud of our heritage and glad to see it continue. I think however, that some people need a history and civics lesson about what real patriotism means, and what its values really are as written in the Constitution before they start defining who is and who is not a "real American." My heart goes out to the Khan family for their sacrifice and loss.
