gnu.org — From the recent Debian vs Firefox issue, it seems like "Firefox" will eventually and slowly be faced-out on GNU/Linux platforms that adheres to "free software" philosophy. There is currently a first binary release for GNU/Linux / x86 32 bit available, as well as its corresponding source code.

News flash, if you use RedHat (or Fedora) you use "Linux" not "GNU/Linux" since it's RedHat Linux not RedHat GNU/Linux.

It's about freedom, not the damn icon.

it's even worse when that person is the owner of your company. you wince when he says things in meetings with clients.

they've got WMD's.

they asked them to use the trademarked logo AND submit all patches to them for verification before implementing them, meaning slowing down development; debian developers think it stupid to do either. The DSC is what makes Debian great, if you want to bitch use another distro.

Firefox won't be removed from Linux. Only from a few extremist distros. It's a pity about Debian but its entirely posible to utilise the Debian base without falling in line with their social contract. Ubuntu already runs its own version of Firefox (meaning its own port with its own security fixes, not a seperate program) and will undoubtedly continue to call it Firefox and avoid the madness. As a result the most visable Linux distros will continue to utilise Firefox. It's unlikely the average person will even realised this has happened.

I think this whole Firefox/Ice Weasel issue is just making everyone shoot themselves in the foot.

I hadn't realised about the "Firefox Community Edition" policy. Does anyone know whether Debian have considered/raised this possibility? Would Debian's changes to the updating system take it outside the Community Edition policy anyway?Anything has got to be better than ending up with "Iceweasel". That will alienate "normal" users (an especially relevant consideration for newbie-friendly Debian-based distros like Ubuntu), by reinforcing the perception that Linux is solely for geeks with a juvenile sense of humour.

I hope they make a version for Windows!

This is kind of stupid... all this bitching and infighting is counter productive.

Amen to that.
