Here's the MOT page describing the finger writing, including a description of how it was developed and a video. http://www.motorola.com/content.jsp?globalObjectId=7227

I'm guessing the motivation behind this is for writing Chinese and Japanese symbols. I have a feeling regular predictive input would be faster for romance languages.

Uhh, no. Motorola can't even produce a usable basic phone UI, in software or hardware. Now they're dicking around with handwriting recognition, an always-cumbersome and poor replacement for a keyboard?Motorola's phones and Phone Tools are the most execrable examples of design in the marketplace today. The last thing they should be wasting their time on is crap like this.
