boingboing.net — A Montreal cop cuffed and dragged a university student away, throwing her in a holding cell and writing her a steep ticket ...for failing to hold the subway escalator handrail while she dug in her bag for her subway fare.

I live in Montreal and this is completely baffling. Something else is missing to this story because people smoke pot in front of the police here and most often nothing bad really happens. The police in Montreal tolerate quite a bit. But having two people I know who work for the police I can tell you that verbal assaults on police officers is way too high in this city and I think they are getting fed up. It's not a perfect police force but it's not a terrible one either. She most likely said much more than I don't have 3 hands and she was probably very snooty about it. Does that deserve a fine, cuffs and the rest? Absolutely not. But it also doesn't deserve a smart ass response that was probably delivered the wrong way. I think both parties have some thinking to do.In any case, she will never have to pay that fine. You just plead not guilty, go to court and you're done. My friend was fined a while back for something very silly which was technically illegal but pushing the limits (like giving someone a speeding ticket for going 5 over in a 60 zone on a sunny day with no traffic). The judge rolled her eyes and said "dismissed, next". She's getting lots of publicity but she will never have to pay a dime. It was probably the police's way of saying "next time think twice before mouthing off because it will take you a lot longer to get to your destination". And if it was mouthing off, then the cops need better skills in handling this like pulling her to the side for a few minutes and delaying her so she thinks twice before being rude. It's fun and easy to bash the police but we need them and yes there are bad apples but that job is not easy and far too many people do not even give them the basic respect they deserve. They see Youtube videos of all the bad ones but very seldom do people post or let alone watch the good stuff.

Must you dumbs**ts abbreviate things, even when it causes confusion?

We have to change tires according to seasons. So her winter tires are on the balcony because it's summer.

they are both at fault. the girl was acting a little bitchy and that pissed off the police who overreacted.

If she was focused on finding the fare money in her purse, and cop mumbled the instruction or just said it very fast, it is very possible that she just didn't pick it up, as English is not her first language, and never will be.At least that's how it works for me - I understand English perfectly when it's clearly spoken or when I'm focused, but I have major issues during, say, phone conversation, especially if person on the other side is talking fast.

Nah rollin03, you just did a very poor job of conveying your idea.
