Actually this is the town that they used as a basis for the look in the Silent Hill movie, to bring the game to life on the big screen and give it a real life feel.
There are underground mine fires burning all over the country. Centralia is just one of the bigger ones. Once a coal "glob" start to smolder (think of a mound of wood chips in the hot sun) it's next to impossible to put out. This happens naturally just as often as it does in mines. A lot of forest fires happen because above ground coal seeps or mounds catch fire this way..... I've been to Centralia and a few others a number of times and they are eerie.
I thought about submitting this months ago when I heard about it. I didn't because I didn't think anyone would digg it. Go Figure. If you search around online you can find some interesting documentaries about the town. It's a very intriguing tale. The one thing that bothers me is they say it has enough fuel to burn for 100 more years.
