william01 One side of my family is German, I lost at least 10 Uncles and Cousins that I never got to meet because of that stupid war so don't assume that I'm talking as a gungho American saying that all was justified. Unfortunately the war was not choreographed to my or your liking.The soldiers didn't all line up in formation and take turns shooting at each other like we all think wars should be.The Nazis and Imperial Japan did their best to destroy the cities and their populations. You treat the Allied bombings as if they were a single act that stands alone. These only came after the cites of the countries that they had attack received the same treatment.In the battle to take Okinawa, over 250,000 people were killed taking just that one island.If you think that taking the mainland was going to have minimal casualties then I think that you are mistaken.They didn't surrender after Hiroshima, they hesitated after Nagasaki.The Allies lost around 51 million people, and the Axis lost 11 million.I think that the Axis powers got off relatively easy compared to the destruction that they brought to the rest of the world.

Morally Repugnant, OKThese are the facts, 62 million people are dead, 250,000 people died just taking one island, over 100,000 civilians, many committing suicide rather then surrender to the American forces. There is still active fighting by the Japanese troops all throughout Asia. The Japanese are just as determined to defend their homeland from invasion as the Germans were (read about the battle of Berlin if you want to see fighting to the bitter end)You have 3 choices:1. Continue to fire bomb Japanese cities from remote bases until they surrender -- you saw how effective that was against the Germans -- they lost Dresden, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Berlin, Colon, and still they didn't surrender - the Japanese were just as determined -- how many would have died?2. You can do a land invasion -- remember Okinawa - 250,000 dead on one island -- there are 80,000,000 Japanese on the mainland, they have been told to fight to the death to defend their homeland. You assume a huge loss of US soldiers and a horrendous loss of civilian life just like in Okinawa. If you chose this one, look all you sons and nephews in the eyes and tell we the you would like to see them laying somewhere in Japan with their brains splattered all over the ground during this invasion.3. You can drop a bomb on Hiroshima, kill 120,000 people and hope they surrender, remember, you don't even know if the only 2 bombs that you have will work.Before you call me morally repugnant, please pick one of these options. Remember, hundreds of thousands of peoples lives are in your hands.

The options you give me are:- Keep killing civilians until they surrender- Undertake a military campaign that will cause the loss of life of American military personnel- Keep killing civilians until they surrenderI choose door number 3, negotiate. Accept something other than unconditional surrender (you don't hang their emperor) if you cannot or will not defeat them militarily.If you think unconditional surrender is worth the soldiers you will lose by continued fighting, than do so.I don't care how many crimes someone has committed, or how many people they have killed. I wouldn't find it acceptable for the police to drag their family into the street and shoot them one by one until they surrendered, rather than risk police lives by trying to subdue them.

Peeling skin and burned off heads are not unique to an atomic bomb. Had we not dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we just would have used regular bombs and done far more damage and killed far more people. It just would have taken longer. And, because it would have taken longer, the Japanese would have resisted for substantially longer. This would then have resulted in us expanding the campaign and us leveling much larger cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, causing casualties not in the thousands, but in the millions, in an attempt to stop their war machine.Atomic bombs are, of course, horrible. But let us realize that the far greater horror was the war itself which resulted in many many times more lives lost. And, I happen to think that the atomic bomb brought a faster end to the war and, in the end, saved far more lives than it took. Was it an ideal solution? Of course not, but ending the war as fast as possible by using an atomic bomb was, in my opinion, the best option of the realistic options available to the US.
