pffft... The knight industry two thousand had this in the 80s. Its called a molecular bonded shell, or MBS for short. Though KITT's spray-on shield was bullet and explosion proof as well!

it already has happened, i own a waterproof phone i bought in japan. Its not just water resistant, i let it soak in a bucket of water for an hour and it still works perfectly fine. though i dont think they water proofed it the same way as they described in this article...
