studentsforgravel.com— Mike Gravel: "That ones real simple, I would legalize marijuana. [...] You should be able to buy that at a liquor store."Did Mike just blow your mind?

I've posted this before, but I think it needs to be said again. The M/J issue is just like the illegal immigrants issue. The reason pot won't be legalized is, one: This guy can't do it, no pres can do it. He can only promise not to veto it. It still has to run the gauntlet before it gets to his desk. And, two: It will never get to his desk because there is a huge industry called the prison industry. tens of Thousands of people make their mortgage payment every month from their jobs as guards, jailers, police men, judges, lawyers, court reporters, secretaries, etc. those jobs depend on huge numbers of people being imprisoned. And they WILL get out and vote.. unlike potheads who won't get off the couch. This on illegals.."In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt 1907
MJ is already decriminalized in 12 US states and in most states simple possession of small amounts does not result in jail time. Its time to decriminalize it but its not like the US is some terrible police state like people make it out to be. Get a grip. Most growers don't get in trouble for the plants as much as they get time for stealing electricity or evading taxes. Unfortunately a lot of these other illegal activities go hand in hand with dealing and growing. Most countries MJ is illegal. At least a dozen countries penalty are long long prison sentences or death. 1 country is legal Bangladesh and a few dozen countries are essentially decriminalized. Writing this from Thailand where it is very illegal.
If the election came down to Mike Gravel vs Ron Paul it would create quite the dilemma. It would no longer be a matter of voting for the lesser of two evils, but the better of two goods.

Douchebag! the president has full rights to implement troop movements at any time. While it was (until recently) up to the congress to declare war. as far as marijuana goes he can remove the dea whit is a branch of the justice department on the first day of office and i also believe he can change the scheduling of marijuana on a national level. I believe you grossly underestimate the power of the president.
People aren't so stupid as to change the constitution to take away our rights. That's what the non-direct democratic government we have NOW does. Gravel wants (and perhaps even Ron Paul), to give us back OUR power. That's something to think about.

Should politics be about who can win, or about who you WANT to win?
