This is really pissing me off. I've been using Linux as a solid desktop platform for about 5 years. Within that time I've had to ween myself off of "Windows Programs" that I was used to using. This was tons of work but I was pushed by all the mystery behind Microsoft's application design. From the way some of the core applications in Windows Server 2003 work, to their registry design and hierarchy, even their mismatched flags and inconsistent commands, I cannot stand, nor understand Microsoft Software. These partner ships make me nervous. I really don't care what happens as long as GNU/Linux remains free (beer, freedom), and Microsoft doesn't develop a line of the code in GNU/Linux.
@Freedomnight and generalalloy Read the article and not just the headline. Linus hasn't committed either way to GPL 3 yet and has said that he's moved to "I'm skeptical" from "Hell no." and:"The current draft makes me think it's at least a possibility in theory, but whether it's practical and worth it is a totally different thing," he said. "Practically speaking, it would involve a lot of work to make sure everything relevant is GPLv3-compatible even if we decided that the GPL 3 is OK."He didn't say he was satisfied, he didn't say he would use it... all he said is that it's better than the horror the original drafts were.
If I was working on an open source project, I sure as hell wouldn't except any help from Microsoft. Not even an ex-employee who is contributing for free in his spare time. Patent contamination could get us both sued by the big MS.I'd rather just stay clear of the whole company.
I do wonder what is going on behind closed doors that we will never be privy to that is encouraging this trend....I'm in agreement that the powers that be @ Xandros have to know their user base is not going to appreciate this. And the reality is that if Ubuntu does do the deed, than all the distros based on Ubuntu will be caught like fish in a net. This will include Mint,Freespire/Linspire,MEPIS,etc. This does not paint a happy picture, unless we Linux folk are being too paranoid..And I doubt that.

There is always the source. Ubuntu is convenient, but as a Debian derivative I doubt it will be hard to replace it with a pure Debian system.
