I never said loopholes were illegal just that the fact that a loophole exists doesn't make it the "right" thing to do. There are lots of things that are perfectly legal but still frowned upon by society. Certainly things would be better if the loopholes were closed, I'm just saying that companies should have certain moral and ethical standards. It probably comes down to a right vs left argument. The right tends to think that its every man for himself and screw anybody that gets in your way. The left tends to think that companies and individuals have certain responsibilities to the communities in which they profit.

I think this is a horrible argument. They are trying to say that, even though the government has not challenged Microsoft's recording of licensing revenue in Nevada since it started in 1977, the state should now fine the widely successful American company. Why? Because the state is completely broke. Microsoft has contributed greatly to the development of the area and brought in plenty of revenue for the state. I don't see any relationship between the arguments here. It like reading an article about Washington state failing, then one about fining Microsoft for three decades worth of business practices. This like saying that, because California is broke, they are going back and reviewing security camera tapes and fining everyone who has jaywalked in the past 30 years.

Except that Microsoft "lives" in Washington, and uses Washington courts, and its employee's kids go to Washington schools, and a Washington fire department responds to fire calls, and Washington cops enforce the Washington laws that keep them and their business safe and sound. If they are based in Washington, then they should pay Washington taxes. I can't opt out of Federal taxes and just say I'll pay them in another country, can I?

Dear Government,Please provide an educated workforce, police and fire services, roads, infrastructure, parks (lots of them), and a legal system to protect Microsoft's business. But please don't ask them to pay for any of it.Have you looked into what SC had to give Boeing to move? It's a race to the bottom, and you're damn shortsighted if you think South Carolina will be able to sustain its deal with Boeing.

What is really happening here is the opposite thought - this is like someone from Oregon rolling into California and demanding to pay no sales tax. They get the benefit of Washington State, but don't have to pay for it. WA has no income tax, so why shouldn't it be able to charge this tiny, very specific tax?

Congrats - the winner of the race to the bottom ends up at the bottom.

Washington passes massive amounts of anti-business legislation and then cries foul when companies do their best to avoid them.
