It's simple, firefox is the perfect solution to microsoft's monopoly problems. It demonstrates that another product can become popular without being included in windows, even if windows includes a free alternative. So crapware developers like real can no longer claim that it's impossible to compete with anything included with windows for free. And as browsers move towards total standards compliance, it will eventually not matter which browser your using. So microsoft is in essense giving up zero profit by encouraging the use of other browsers, but will gain huge profits in other areas without being called a monopoly.
"You like firefox, that's nice. I do too. You use IE? Cool. That's how it should go. I understand web designers have some trouble with IE, but I highly doubt all of you are web designers.."No, we have trouble with sites that refuse to support Firefox. There is no technical reason not to support it, they simply don't bother. The important thing to note here is that if they supported Firefox, there site would still work in IE. But the other way around is discrimination. Take for instance MSNBC refusing to fix their videos so you can use Firefox & WMP. I guess that with this coming from *MS*NBC this shouldn't a surprise.
