engadget.com — Microsoft is offering free fixes to all problematic Xbox 360s built in 2005, and is sending out refunds to users who paid for repairs to that "three red lights of death" problem or other quirks before this dealio went into effect. Of course, one could argue that Microsoft should've been doing these repairs for free from the outset.

So did they update the hardware since the end of 2005 or are these things going to continue to break because of the same problem?

One could also argue that you are one effed up individual and that this is the worst comment I've read all day. And by the negative diggs, I see they already have so big "fraking" deal.

"I believe it's just that they're extending the warranty on 360s made in 2005 by 1 (one) year and repairs/replacements are now free. So, you get an extra year of [free] coverage."so the one year extended EB exchange service i paid for is simply a waste ?

quick reply: does anybody know if the xbox 360 contains the "mfr date" somewhere on it (like the original xbox did)? i'm at work now, and i really don't want to have to wait until i get home to find out (and, then, potentially be disappointed when it's not there).

I had called in about a month ago and was quoted $130 to fix my console. I put it off until now becaue I didn't think I should have to spend so much money to fix a machine that should work for longer than a half year since it was bought. I'm just glad Microsoft is standing by their product and fixing them for free. I think these things should come with an automatic years warranty, becuase thre is no reason a $400 machine should break in 6 months or less.

is'nt these repairs within the warranty period anyways?

Did you not think that using a 500+ celcius heat gun on delicate electronics might have been a bad idea? My 360 died after 8 months, I returned it, and four days later had received a brand new replacement under warranty at no cost.

Ironically, I had a 2005 Xbox 360 that died in May 06 so I got it replaced for free under warranty and then they shipped me a 2005 Xbox 360 refurb as a replacement...It doesn't say anywhere how long this is good for? i.e. What happens if my 2005 Xbox 360 dies in 2008...is it still free?People making fun of Microsoft for these issues - just wait until the PS3 launches...the way they've been rushing to get that s**t built, I don't even want to know the kind of problems it will have.
